Why are Women Suing over Transvaginal Meshes?
Transvaginal or Urogynaecological
meshes are used in the treatment of stress incontinence. This condition can cause
women to suffer leakage from their bladder when doing various impact activities
such as jumping and running, or even when coughing and sneezing. Incontinence
is common in women post childbirth as well as at menopause. Almost 20% of affected
women say that the condition affects their daily lives.
These meshes are also offered as a
treatment option for women suffering from POP(pelvic organ prolapse), which affects
almost 50% of women that have had children. It occurs when the rectum, uterus
or bladder (pelvic organs) sag and move out of position. This can occur when
the muscles, ligaments and tissues of the pelvic floor that support
theseorgans, become weak or damaged.
Vaginal meshes- the current controversy
Most short-term clinical trials conducted
before launching these products have found that common mesh implants have low
complication and high efficacy rates. However, there is a growing body of
evidence which indicates that the complication rates are extremely high in the
case of mesh implants used in POP treatment.
In addition, there is very limited
information on the success of these implant procedures in the long term. Now
there are clear indications that the complication rates could be considerably higher
than those reported in the trials.
The complications
Many women that have undergone
transvaginal mesh implant surgery complain of complications such as:
·
Mesh exposure & erosion- The mesh cuts through the internal tissues
or protrudes out of the vaginal wall
·
Vaginal scarring
·
Painful sex
·
Fistula formation
·
Pain in the pelvic areas
·
Back and leg pain
·
Urinary problems
·
Vaginal bleeding
·
Vaginal infections
About filing a transvaginal mesh lawsuit
Some of these complications might
surface many years post the surgery and can be extremely difficult to treat. Many
women that have suffered adverse reactions and complications from these
implants have filed lawsuits against the device manufacturers.
